The night was once vibrant when the soft grass cushioned my feet as a child. Each dip in the ground and every breeze through the trees was a new wonder and opportunity. My heart raced with excitement for all the world had to offer, and any hint of adventure made it soar. I envisioned myself in the Amazon's trees, on the Congo's rivers, in Jerusalem's Ancient City, savoring a French pastry in Italy... I would read books to imagine the aromas from years past, before food factories dominated, smelling berries, spices, roasting meat, hunted game, and freshly baked bread. My mind was my television, crafting scenes of romance, thrill, drama, and mystery!
In my realm, I ran alongside lions with massive golden manes. Their cubs trailed behind us, and our voices echoed across the horizon with loud and menacing roars!
I performed onstage like a gymnast, possessing the skills of a ballerina and a martial arts expert. The stage was my playground, just like the vast blue ocean was when I wanted to visit the beach.
My Aunt would bring me to the library, and I would connect with the stuffed animals adorning the children's bookshelves. I read their matching books one by one and leapt if it was a frog, hopped if it was a rabbit, and blared if it were a book about trumpets... (Indeed, that’s a surefire way to get personally escorted out of the library)
Ah, but when I was at home... During those sleepless nights, I would gaze out of my window and look up at the stars. It felt like being in a theater, but more intimate. I realized that was the boundary... The best of what existed out there... The pinnacle of where I could reach. All those stars!!! They almost seemed to have a new-car scent. Yes... And I could almost reach out and touch them. They felt like soft electricity, pliable between my fingertips.
Oh, I remember.
